Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering

Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering

Brent Stephens

The mission of our department is to prepare our students to successfully enter the civil, architectural, or environmental engineering professions. The Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) is home to approximately 400 undergraduate and graduate students who are pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degree. We expect our graduates to become licensed professional engineers and reach responsible positions in a wide range of professional settings, including consulting firms, industry, or government.

During your time at Illinois Tech, I encourage you to take advantage of the numerous extracurricular activities that are available both within the university and around the great city of Chicago. I encourage you to challenge yourself by exploring undergraduate research opportunities such as the Armour College of Engineering R&D program, to join an interdisciplinary team to compete in a national design competition, to participate in athletic activities, or to take on a leadership role in one of the many student organizations, including students chapters of major professional organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Engineers Without Borders (EWB), and many others. These kinds of opportunities will help you develop leadership skills and foster strong networks with colleagues and professionals to help you throughout your career.

If you’re a current student, I also encourage you to pay close attention to each CAEE newsletter that comes to your email inbox, as they are always full of announcements for interesting activities, events, job announcements, and more.

Enjoy your time here and do great work!

Sincerely,
Brent Stephens
