Research Interests

Guillermo Atkin joined Illinois Institute of Technology in 1986. From 1974 to 1981 he was a full-time lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University Federico Santa Maria and a consultant for the telecommunications industry. In 1982, he was a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. During his studies, he was a research assistant for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

His current interests are in the area of bandwidth efficient coding and modulation techniques for digital mobile systems, wireless communication systems, and applications of communication theory concepts to genetic coding. Atkin is the Director of the Digital Communication Systems Laboratory. This laboratory is an advanced research facility equipped with personal computers, associated peripherals, etc. Researchers consider problems in bandwidth efficient modulation and coding, wireless and mobile communications, wireless sensor networks, and genetics. The laboratory is also intended to provide a complete interactive environment for simulation-based analysis and design of communication systems. Atkin has published more than 40 technical papers and reports in the communications area.
