A team of undergraduate and graduate students from the Illinois Tech Material Advantage Chapter produced a blade for the TMS (The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society) Bladesmithing Competition. The group set out to produce a champagne saber made of superior quality decorative steel they would forge using severe plastic deformation.

Two Armour College of Engineering students Mengmeing Zhuang (ECE Ph.D. candidate) and Zhen Bao (ECE Ph.D. candidate) were named finalists for the Chicago regional round of Tiger Launch, the largest national student-founded startup contest. The two teamed up with Yang Gao (Institute of Design MDM candidate) to create ZD Energy. Learn more about the finalists here.

Two recent graduates of Armour College of Engineering, Jimmy Shah (EE ‘16) and Farshogar Umrigar (EE ‘16, M.S. EE ‘16), were named finalists in the Cleantech University Prize (Cleantech UP) Competition. Clean Energy Trust, a Chicago-based nonprofit is holding the competition to support the next generation of energy innovators through mentorship and funding.

The Illinois Tech Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) student group has announced the accomplishments of its members in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions. Two Armour College of Engineering student entrepreneurs have won competitions through the organization.

As many Armour College of Engineering students were studying for finals, the student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Steel Bridge team had the added task of preparing for the ASCE National Student Bridge Competition, held at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah from May 27 - 28.

An interdisciplinary student team from Illinois Institute of Technology was one of ten winning teams who will launch start-ups through the Nano Startup Challenge in Cancer (NSC2). ​The Center for Advancing Innovation (CAI) and the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute partnered to launch the competition with the goal to bring near-term, commercially viable cancer nanotechnology inventions to market.

An interdisciplinary student team from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has advanced to the second round in the NIH Neurostartup Challenge, a three-phase national business plan competition sponsored by National Institutes of Health (NIH) where teams are charged with developing a commercially viable business plan for one of 16 NIH-patented technologies. The winning team will be awarded the chance to launch a funded start-up company.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Great Lakes Student Conference was held on Illinois Institute of Technology’s Main Campus from April 14 - 16. Illinois Tech’s ASCE Chapter not only hosted the Conference, but competed in the contests as well. The Steel Bridge Team took 2nd place overall, earning the opportunity to compete in the National competition to be held at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah from May 27 - 28. Other successes included ASCE chapter member, Khadijah Nesbitt’s (ARCE, 3rd year) third place win in the Technical Paper contest.
