Two Armour College of Engineering students Mengmeing Zhuang (ECE Ph.D. candidate) and Zhen Bao (ECE Ph.D. candidate) were named finalists for the Chicago regional round of Tiger Launch, the largest national student-founded startup contest. Kenji Suzuki, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Armour College of Engineering was invited and named an Associate Editor of the prestigious journal, Pattern Recognition (Impact factor: 3.4). The journal is the official journal of the Pattern Recognition Society and has been the leading journal in the field of pattern recognition since it's founding in 1968.

Professor Jafar Saniie has been named the the new Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department. Professor Ashfaq Khokar, has left Illinois Tech due to an excellent opportunity that was presented to him.

Professor Jafar Saniie has assumed full responsibilities of the ECE department chair duties, and will hold the position until July 31, 2018. A search for a full five year term ECE Chair will start in the Fall of 2017 with August 1, 2018 as a expected start date.

Two recent graduates of Armour College of Engineering, Jimmy Shah (EE ‘16) and Farshogar Umrigar (EE ‘16, M.S. EE ‘16), were named finalists in the Cleantech University Prize (Cleantech UP) Competition. Clean Energy Trust, a Chicago-based nonprofit is holding the competition to support the next generation of energy innovators through mentorship and funding.

Qing-Chang Zhong, Max McGraw Endowed Chair Professor of Energy and Power Engineering and Management, was selected to be in the 2017 class of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellows. Becoming an IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select members whose extraordinary accomplishments are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Dr. Zhong was cited as receiving the honor for his contributions to power electronic systems control.
