John Shen

Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, John Shen, is the Principal Investigator on two recently awarded federal grants that will continue to energize the power engineering research being conducted at Armour College of Engineering.

The first project, “Wide Bandgap Solid State Circuit Breakers for AC and DC Microgrids,” was awarded over $418,000 over the course of three years by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, John Shen, served as the General Chair of the 8th Annual IEEE Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition (ECCE 2016), sponsored by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and the IEEE Industrial Application Society (IAS). The expo is the world’s leading technical conference and exposition for energy conversion solutions and was attended by a record breaking 1,600 researchers and engineers from all over the world.

Mr. Samuel Anderson and Dr. Fuyu Lin, representatives from the Lin-Anderson Foundation, presented John Shen, Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Armour College of Engineering, with a check for $50,000 to expand research and education activities in the area of power electronics and semiconductor devices.

John Shen, Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Armour College of Engineering, recently had a collaborative research project he is working on featured in Ireland’s Silicon Republic. Collaborating on the project with Shen are Professor Peter Parbrook and Anne-Marie Kelleher from Tyndall National Institute and Dr. Miryam Arredondo-Arechavala of Queens University Belfast. Through their research, the team is seeking to develop more efficient ways of harnessing converted electricity.
