These intensive courses are offered on a short schedule throughout the year and allow students to enhance their knowledge in a specific area or learn new skills to further their professional development and careers.

Best Practices in Project Management

What do many of today's projects have in common? Unfortunately, the typical answer is: weak business cases, schedule slippages, and cost overruns. This three-day introductory course presents commonly used tools and techniques and best practices to build an effective business case, develop a realistic schedule and budget, and successfully execute and complete a project. You will be first introduced to a generic project management life cycle model. We will then review the basic project management principles, tools, and techniques. You will also learn engineering-tailored best practices used by high performing, project-centric organizations. You will have an opportunity to apply selected tools in the form of short classroom exercises.

The participants are divided into small teams, each consisting of four or five members. Through out the course, the teams are assigned different exercises, wherein they apply the principles and tools they have just learned. The teams make presentations of their solutions followed by a group discussion.

Dr. Prasad S. Kodukula, PMP, PgMP, is a multiple award-winning speaker, coach, author, and entrepreneur with 30 years of professional experience. He is the founder & CEO of Kodukula & Associates, Inc., a project management training, coaching, and consulting company in Chicago, Illinois. He has spoken to audiences spanning 45 countries on a variety of topics in project management. Prasad has trained or coached several thousands of project/program/portfolio managers at more than 40 Fortune 100 companies, the World Bank, the United Nations, and the United States government. He was recognized twice by the Project Management Institute as "Best of the Best in Project Management" with 2016 Eric Jenett Project Management Award of Excellence and 2010 PMI Distinguished Contribution Award. He also received prestigious awards from the USEPA and the States of Kansas and Illinois for outstanding achievements in education, training, and technology innovation. Prasad is a co-author or contributing author of eight books and more than 40 articles.

Project Risk Management

In project management, implementation of an effective risk management process is imperative for today’s complex projects. This course presents a five-step process to manage project threats as well as opportunities. On every project, you will be able to identify and analyze risks and develop response strategies for each identified risk, and establish an effective project risk management process in your organization You will learn an effective risk management methodology coupled with proven tools and techniques as well as industry best practices. Quantitative tools and simulations are used to analyze risk.

Fundamentals of Ecological Sustainability

Instructor: Amber Autumn, PMP, LEED AP

This is a two-week course design for engineering graduate and master students to develop basic skills they will need in their career and professional development. It is essential to learn the basic concepts of sustainability and how it applies to the real world. Numerous career paths will intersect with ecological sustainability. This course will focus on the basic of ecological sustainability, overview of LEED and other bodies of certifications. Additionally, this course will address reducing waste in business and overview of systems thinking. The students will work in teams to apply the tools and techniques learned in the classroom to projects in the form of case study exercises in order for students to be better prepared to use the newly acquired skills in their future career path.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Amber Autumn is the founder of Green Ribbon Foundation (GRF), a nonprofit that partners with businesses, non-profits and the next generation to educate, design and implement fiscally responsible and ecological sustainable practices. With 15 years of professional commercial construction experience ranging from job site superintendent and project management to business development and environmental consulting. Amber has managed construction projects in numerous locations in the United States and has developed and executed successful business plans for construction companies and social impact leaders in the field. Amber’s construction career was the catalysis of inspiration for building green systems. Her goal is to work with decision makers of businesses to incorporate more ecology sustainability into their business model. In order to execute her mission and vision of inspiring more green business, Green Ribbon Foundation was founded in 2014. As an innovator, Amber has identified new business models and implantation strategies that transform ecological sustainability into financial business success. Amber is frequently hired as a public speaker, and has been a keynote speaker at the Conscious Business Network, whom mission is to develop conscious leadership, which requires self-reflection, self-knowledge and personal alignment so that conscious business is possible. Other keynote speaking engagements have been at the Nexus Initiative, which is an organization consisting of ideation and commercial intellectual property development with the mission of creating tools for ecological sustainability. Amber is also an adjunct professor Illinois Institute of Technology teaching construction and sustainability. Personally, Amber enjoys gardening, yoga, tennis and spending time with her fiancé and their German Shepherd.

Master of Engineering Practical Experience

This course is a mentored, immersive practical engineering training. Students learn under the direction of Professional Engineers and practicing engineers by working on real engineering projects. The student will perform hands-on engineering, including learning and developing/applying engineering principles and concepts to complete the project assigned to the student. The student will apply engineering ethics and safety during their practical engineering training.  Students will communicate the results of their work in written and oral communications. Students will receive assignments of varying complexity consistent with their graduate standing.
