All students obtained a full license to operate drones on construction projects after successfully completing a new, unique graduate course piloted in spring 2019 by Illinois Institute of Technology Assistant Professor of Civil and Architectural Engineering Ivan Mutis.

Number of Incoming Women and Men in Equal Proportions

This fall Illinois Tech not only welcomed its largest class of first-year students in 30 years, but its Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) in Armour College of Engineering also achieved its own high point: Its 2018 incoming undergraduate class reached gender parity.

Bora Jang (Ph.D. Student CE) was named the recipient of the John Fisher Student Award for best student paper at the Ninth New York City Bridge Conference held from August 21-23, 2017. She was honored for her paper “Bridge Rating Modification to Incorporate Potential Fatigue Damage from Truck Overloads.”

Three Armour College of Engineering students, Matthew Copple (CE, 4th year), Haris Latic (CE ‘17) and Nicholas Wozniak (CE, PhD Student), conducted research into countermeasures that can minimize the threat of vehicles to crowds. Members of the team recently met with officer Kevin Hacker and the Chicago Police Department’s Threat and Vulnerability Assessment Group to present the results of their work.

The Student Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at Illinois Tech has received a Letter of Honorable Mention from the national organization. This is recognition received by only the top third of all Student Organizations based on outstanding activities as recorded in the 2016 Chapter annual report.

Brent Stephens, Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering in Armour College of Engineering's Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department, had a paper he co-authored with colleagues from University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory published in Science Translational Medicine. The paper, “Bacterial colonization and succession in a newly opened hospital,” describes the results of a yearlong study of the bacterial diversity associated with the patients, staff, and built surfaces in a newly opened hospital.
