Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, John Shen, is the Principal Investigator on two recently awarded federal grants that will continue to energize the power engineering research being conducted at Armour College of Engineering.

The first project, “Wide Bandgap Solid State Circuit Breakers for AC and DC Microgrids,” was awarded over $418,000 over the course of three years by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

A group of students from Armour College’s Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering (CAEE) Department and Illinois Tech’s College of Architecture recently placed second in the attached housing track at the Race to Zero Student Design Competition. The annual competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and challenges college students to design zero energy homes. The 2016 competition included 31 teams from 25 institutions and was held at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, Colorado.

Armour College of Engineering Assistant Professor Mehdi Modares was awarded funding by the Department of Energy for his proposal entitled: Stochastic Finite Element Modeling for Consideration of Uncertainties in Core Restraint Load Pad Contact. The award is in the form of a three-year fellowship that will support one student’s tuition and stipend.
