Project Aims to Develop Robots That Improve U.S. Manufacturing Competitiveness

Matthew Spenko and Ankit Srivastava, associate professors in Illinois Tech’s Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering, were awarded a $2 million, four-year grant to develop the framework to understand the modeling, sensing, control, design, and fabrication of a new class of soft robots.

The fifth annual National Robotics Week takes place from April 5-13, 2014. Robotics week started as a way to celebrate the US as a leader in robotics development and to inspire students of all ages to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related fields.

Armour College of Engineering MMAE Associate Professor of Mech. Engineering Matthew Spenko, Ph.D. was asked to comment on an article in The Columbia Chronicle about the TERMES project. Researchers have created robots that utilize swarm intelligence to build complex structures. The team was inspired by termites, who construct complex structures as a group, but have a limited view of the entire project and work independently.
