We left off with the Scarlet Space Hawks as they launched their student organization and secured their funding to build their robot. Before the team could travel to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) and place third in the mining category of the NASA Robotic Mining Competition (RMC), they needed to build their robot.

Kenji Suzuki, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Armour College of Engineering, accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the National Cancer Institute Special Emphasis Panel, Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, Dr. Suzuki will contribute to biomedical research on a national level by reviewing grant applications submitted to the NIH and making recommendations on the applications to the NIH national advisory council or board.

When Pedro Morales (EE, 4th year) and Shawn Zachariah (EE, 4th year) stepped foot on NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at the end of last May, it was the culmination of months of planning, recruiting, building, and testing. The two students are the founding members of the Scarlet Space Hawks, the first Illinois Institute of Technology team to compete in NASA’s Annual Robotic Mining Competition (RMC).

Max McGraw Endowed Chair Professor of Energy and Power Engineering and Management at Armour College of Engineering, Dr. Qing-Chang Zhong, was featured in a Midwest Energy News article on his game changing control device that allows for better management of energy from renewable energy sources on the electric grid.

Grainger Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, John Shen, is the Principal Investigator on two recently awarded federal grants that will continue to energize the power engineering research being conducted at Armour College of Engineering.

The first project, “Wide Bandgap Solid State Circuit Breakers for AC and DC Microgrids,” was awarded over $418,000 over the course of three years by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

Brandon Simons (ECE, 4th year) was recently awarded one of six environmental engineering scholarships from Brown and Caldwell, a leading environmental engineering and construction firm with several office across the midwest. Simons will receive $5,000 to use towards his tuition. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee of Brown and Caldwell professionals on the basis of their academic accomplishments.

Armour College of Engineering student Cheryl Lininger (EE, 4th year) was honored with two awards at the 52nd Annual Writing Contest held by the Humanities Department at Lewis College of Human Sciences. She has won awards in the competition four years in a row. The winners were honored with a plaque and prize at a luncheon on April 17 in the Welcome Center of the MTCC. The awards Lininger earned are:
