President Emeritus of Illinois Tech Would Lead Influential Institution

Alumnus Satyan “Sam” G. Pitroda (M.S. EE ’66) was elected as a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This prestigious recognition is considered one of the highest honors for engineers.

Pitroda, Chairman, The Pitroda Group, has been elected for development of rural telecommunication infrastructure in India, NAE said in a statement announcing 80 new and 22 foreign members.

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently elected Illinois Institute of Technology President John L. Anderson as a member to its governing Council. The NAE also elected a new foreign secretary and three additional councillors. All terms begin July 1, 2015.

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Armour College of Engineering is among more than 120 U.S. engineering schools leading a transformative movement in engineering education announced at the White House today. In a letter presented to President Barack Obama, IIT Armour and peer institutions committed to establish special educational programs designed to prepare undergraduates to solve “Grand Challenges”—complex yet achievable goals to improve national and international health, security, sustainability and quality of life in the 21st century.

C. D. Mote, Jr., President of the National Academy of Engineering and Regents Professor on leave from the University of Maryland in College Park, will deliver the commencement address at Illinois Institute of Technology’s 2013-14 ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Main Campus.

Mote has led the NAE since July 1, 2013 when he was elected to serve a six-year term. Under his leadership, the NAE will focus on the global role of the organization, the importance of talent in the engineering workforce, and the visibility and understanding of engineering.

Four student teams from Armour College of Engineering (ACE) have been hard at work preparing their entries for the NAE E4U Video Contest. The teams were comprised of students who participate in the ACE Student-led projects program. For their videos, teams sought to answer the question “How engineering creations serve the welfare of humanity and the needs of society.”

Armour College of Engineering is pleased to announce that Alan Cramb, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at IIT, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering’s (NAE) 2014 Membership Class. Dan Mote, Jr., NAE President, announced earlier today that the provost is one of the 67 new members and 11 foreign associates who received this honor.
