Keeping students and faculty toasty in some of the older buildings on Illinois Institute of Technology’s Mies Campus can prove tricky during bitter Midwestern winters, but a group of engineering students is hoping to improve heating efficiency through the support of the Armour R&D program.

“The way I think about Alexa is the way AI is revolutionizing daily convenience,” said Rohit Prasad (M.S. EE ’99), vice president and head scientist at Amazon Alexa, as he opened the 2018 Darsh T. Wasan Lecture at Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus on November 12. “That’s the mission we are on.”

Undergraduate students from across the country and outside the US spent their summer at Illinois Tech immersed in faculty-mentored engineering research. This is the fourth year of the Armour R&D Summer Research Immersion Program, which was created to provide students with hands-on engineering experience during their undergraduate studies, and to encourage students to consider future careers in research.

Cagatay Tanil (Ph.D. AE, ‘16) was recently selected to receive the prestigious Bradford W. Parkinson Award for his Ph.D. Dissertation, “Detecting GNSS Spoofing Attacks Using INS Coupling.” The competitive award is given annually to the best Ph.D. thesis internationally on satellite-based navigation.

The program, an Armour College of Engineering Distinctive Education initiative, offers undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to gain hands-on research and development experience in the lab of a faculty mentor.

Bora Jang (Ph.D. Student CE) was named the recipient of the John Fisher Student Award for best student paper at the Ninth New York City Bridge Conference held from August 21-23, 2017. She was honored for her paper “Bridge Rating Modification to Incorporate Potential Fatigue Damage from Truck Overloads.”

Three female engineering undergraduate students were honored at the 2017 Chicago Area Undergraduate Research Symposium (CAURS) for poster presentations detailing the results of their research. The Symposium is one of the largest annual undergraduate research conferences in the country, bringing together hundreds of undergraduate students in the greater Chicago area from all academic disciplines to present their research.
