Armour College of Engineering Co-Terminal student Veronica Ibarra (BME/CHE, 5th year), author of Evaluation of Tissue Response to Alginate Encapsulated Islets in an Omentum Pouch Model, was published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research.

Szu-Chun Chen (BME, 5th year) was awarded first place for her undergraduate research poster at the NanoBio Summit held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) from October 15-16, 2015. She was awarded a year subscription to American Scientist and a check for $300. Chen was invited to present her poster at the NanoBio Summit after placing third in the 2015 Summer Research Expo at UAB.

Veronica Ibarra (BME, 5th year) is spending one month in Taiwan working with reconstructive surgeons at one of the top hospitals in the world for reconstructive microsurgery, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Ibarra will be studying the function of cells encapsulated in biomaterials following implantation in pre-clinical models.

Eric Brey, Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Armour College of Engineering was awarded funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to continue the summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Applications are now being accepted for the summer 2015 Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) REU at the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB). The ERIE-REU, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, provides the opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct interdisciplinary faculty-mentored research on a diverse array of projects related to ecological restoration of aquatic systems. The application deadline is February 27, 2015.
