Undergraduate Research

Kathleen Mullin (MSE, 4th year) was recently named the recipient of a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) for the second year. This accomplishment is extremely rare as the highly competitive program only awards around 100 fellowships each year. The program is co-sponsored by NIST and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Fifteen Armour College of Engineering undergraduate students and their faculty mentors have been awarded fall 2016 Armour R&D Fellowships. The program, an Armour College of Engineering Distinctive Education initiative, offers undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to gain hands-on research and development experience in the lab of a faculty mentor.

Julide Demirdoven, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Armour College of Engineering, co-authored a paper with several undergraduate students who participated in the 2015 Engineering Undergraduate Summer Research Immersion Program. The students were selected and supported by their government to study and perform research in the United States as part of the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP).

A cohort of over 230 undergraduate students from the Brazilian Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) and Institute of International Education (IIE) Global Experience and Training (GET) Program were accepted into the 2016 Engineering Undergraduate Summer Research Immersion Program at Armour College of Engineering. Armour College of Engineering Co-Terminal student Veronica Ibarra (BME/CHE, 5th year), author of Evaluation of Tissue Response to Alginate Encapsulated Islets in an Omentum Pouch Model, was published in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research.

Ana Flavia Capdeville Ramos dos Santos, a Brazilian student who conducted research at Armour College of Engineering as part of the 2015 Engineering Undergraduate Summer Research Immersion Program, was recently published in the International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Metals. The manuscript was based on research she conducted in the lab of Leon Shaw, Rowe Family Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Armour College of Engineering.

Illinois Institute of Technology Office of Research hosted the 2016 Illinois Tech Research Day Poster Competition on April 11, 2016 in Hermann Hall. Students from Armour College of Engineering who also participated in Armour R&D were named the recipients of all three undergraduate awards at the competition.

Recent Armour College of Engineering Alumna Sara Glade (ChE, ‘15, M.S. EnvE, ‘15) was awarded a 2016 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship includes individuals who have gone on to make breakthroughs in their areas of expertise and been honored as Nobel laureates.
